The exhibition The Beginning of the Century is a representative portrait of Czech visual art from the first decade of the 21st century and reveals its most essential elements, which the youngest generation of Czech artists continuously build upon today. It is based on an exploration of the recent past. The exhibition comprehensively presents mainly works that provoked contemporary discussion or significantly advanced the discourse of contemporary fine art. Just as in the current art scene, all media are represented here: painted canvases, photographs, videos, sculptures, objects, installations, as well as projects and activities that are difficult to assign to individual media.

Around 40 active artists will be presented at the exhibition, who will complement their displayed works with performances, lectures, screenings, and discussions. The exhibition in Ostrava will also closely connect with the autumn festival Malamut, which hosts the best performers from the Czech Republic and abroad, and with the non-gallery presentation of contemporary art called Kukačka (Cuckoo), inspired by the brood parasitism of the common cuckoo.
