When you get home from work, everything will be beautifully tidy...

2010

colour photography, digital print, paper, 90 × 60 cm (series 9 pcs)

purchased in 2025 with the support of the Ministry of Culture

In this series of digital prints, Thelenová explores the theme of the home. Our homes are filled to the brim with everyday rituals, whose repetition lends rhythm to our lives. These rituals may involve personal hygiene, sleep, food preparation, rest… and they also include cleaning, which not only keeps our home space tidy and orderly, but also has the potential to cleanse our minds. However, the title of this series also points to another aspect – the deeply rooted gender stereotypes associated with the home environment. While men stereotypically spend most of their day outside the home, working to earn money, women keep the household clean and tidy… Nevertheless, the visual language of this series does not come across as harsh and critical; Thelenová treads carefully, and although the photographs can be viewed through a feminist lens, the individual compositions offer striking aesthetic and humorous perspectives.

THELENOVÁ MICHAELA

(1969) A visual artist, photographer and teacher who is one of the most prominent figures in contemporary Czech conceptual and digital art. She studied art at the Faculty of Education in Ústí nad Labem (1993), where she later worked for many years as a teacher. Since 2008 she has headed the digital media studio at her alma mater’s Faculty of Art and Design. From the beginning of her career in the early 1990s, she has systematically explored the notion of images as vehicles of memory, the construction and manipulation of reality, the relationship between personal experience and historical and social narratives, and reflections on landscape and place, focusing particularly on the North Bohemian border regions. She works with photographs, digital images, text and video, often straddling the boundary between documentary and fiction. Notable series include Satellite, Landscapes, Geist und Schönheit, and her long-term project Beneath the Lime Tree. In 2003 she was a finalist in the Jindřich Chalupecký Award, and her work has been displayed at numerous solo and group exhibitions in the Czech Republic and abroad.
