Born in Slovakia, Fedor Gabčan began to develop a deep interest in Ostrava during the 1960s, after he had settled in this industrial region. For many artists, including photographers, the bleak landscapes of the region, ravaged by industry, hid a powerful beauty, whether in the composition and vast scale of Ostrava’s factories, its distinctive architecture, or the strange, almost surreal-looking landscape structures of lagoons, spoil-tips and spoil-ponds – places where life hung on by a thread or disappeared altogether.
