singed paper, plaster, board, 53 × 40.5 × 23 cm
This assemblage is one of a number of works in which Eduard Ovčáček used casts made by parts of real human bodies. The figural decontextualization is accompanied by a lettristic surface featuring Ovčáček’s typical technique of letters burned into paper. Hot metal letters were pressed onto translucent silk paper, and the contact between these two opposing principles created an original decollage. The surface of Ovčáček’s works of this type bears numerous stigmata, often accompanied by cuttings from newspapers and (later in his career) linear drawings that add clarity to the composition. Ovčáček glued the singed paper onto plaster casts of a woman’s body; another example of this technique is J. H.’s Right Breast.
