gouache on cardboard, 27 × 35 cm
acquired as a gift in 2023
Valentin Držkovic visited Paris twice during the inter-war period. During his second stay (from 1929 to 1932) he painted numerous genre scenes of street life, featuring vagrants and also urban animals. In this small gouache we can see influences from Paul Cézanne (in the reductionist stylization of the enclosed volumes), Paul Gauguin (in the use of strong continuous contours), and Van Gogh (in the bright yellow reflecting the sunlight and occupying almost half of the total space). This painting also attests to Držkovic’s lifelong interest in the depiction of human labour.
