This modestly sized glazed ceramic piece is a major work in the context of art history, as it exemplifies the aesthetic of early post-war Expressionism. The creator of this work, Asger Jorn, was one of the founding members of the CoBrA group, which brought together Expressionist artists from Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands. They were inspired by children’s painting, art brut and the art of indigenous peoples. Although CoBrA only existed for a short time (1948–1951), it had a profound influence on the development of post-war Expressionism.
