Untitled (Stack)

1988 (1985)

patinated terracotta, height 48 cm

This sculpture demonstrates Fibichová’s later shift towards monumental, economical geometric stylized forms of sculpture, a position to which her work evolved from its initial focus on figural forms. Although this work dates from the second half of the 1980s, its form evokes a 1960s informel aesthetic. The sculpture resonates with Fibichová’s typical imprints of ancient cultures as well as the work of the Italian modernist sculptor Marino Marini.

FIBICHOVÁ ZDENA

(1933, Praha – 1991, Praha) Sculptor and ceramicist. From 1948 to 1952 she studied at the Institute of Interior Design, followed in 1952–1957 by studies at the Prague Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design (in Josef Wagner’s sculpture studio). She was a member of the Association of Fine Artists, the Trasa 54 (“Route 54”) group (from 1958), and the Mánes Artists’ Association (1990–1991). Fibichová’s works have been exhibited widely in both solo and group exhibitions from the late 1960s to the present day. Her oeuvre is represented in the collections of many Czech galleries and museums, including the Moravian Gallery in Brno, the National Gallery in Prague, the Museum of Art in Olomouc, and more. Unlike her peers, Fibichová did not seek inspiration in the pre-WW2 avant-garde, but rather in ancient cultures and Mediterranean sculpture (such as the work of Marino Marini). The focus of her early work was the figure, but she increasingly embraced stylized, simplified forms, eventually exploring abstract objects as conveyors of meaning. This process of creative development involved experimentation with flexible, malleable materials such as plasticine and pewter. In the first half of the 1960s Fibichová explored natural motifs (buds, tendrils), culminating in the monumental concrete and cement steles that were typical of her work during this period. In the 1970s and 80s she began incorporating non-sculptural objects and materials into her works, adopting them and creating assemblages.
