Here we are not merely looking at a geometric composition. The apparent randomness of the shapes scattered across the canvas in fact hides a conceptual principle – the disappearance and filling of volumes. This algorithm offers numerous layers of interpretation connected with life. Content filling form, or alternatively a conscious spirit residing in a physical shell, retreating from form. A consciously fulfilled life versus an empty caricature of life, the potential of birth and a fulfilled life… Kubíček imbued his dynamic geometric paintings with powerful philosophical potential.

KUBÍČEK JAN

(1927–2013) A painter, graphic artist and photographer who was one of the key figures in Czech geometric abstract art, Constructivism and the Arte Concreta movement. He attended the Prague Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design from 1948 to 1954 before studying scenography at the city’s Academy of Performing Arts. His work evolved from early realism, informel and lettrism to a systematically constructed form of geometric abstraction based on the analysis of elementary shapes (particularly squares), letters and their variations in painting, drawing, objects, and photography. From the 1960s onwards he focused on serial and conceptual principles, exploring the relationships between order and random chance, and the shifts and dislocations of shapes within a visual field. After returning from abroad in 1968, the newly installed hardline regime restricted Kubíček’s opportunities to exhibit, and it was not until after the 1989 Velvet Revolution that his talents received full recognition. Today his work is considered one of the pinnacles of 20th-century Czech geometric abstraction, and he is represented in numerous major public and private collections both in the Czech Republic and abroad.
