In the series 50% Grey Jiří Thýn explores the limits and boundaries of analogue photography. He is no longer concerned with the depicted reality, rather with technological experiments in the medium of photography, which create a form of behind-the-scenes “alchemy” that is difficult for viewers to perceive and understand.

THÝN JIŘÍ

(1977, Prague) Photographer. From 1999 to 2005 he studied at the photography studio of the Prague Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design, after spending a year studying at the Institute for Creative Photography in Opava. During his studies, he travelled abroad for several study stays at institutions including UIAH in Helsinki, PROGR in Bern, and the FONCA Institute in Mexico City. He has exhibited his works individually at many leading venues, including the Photographers’ Gallery (London), the Museum of Contemporary Photography (Chicago), and the National Gallery (Prague), as well as participating in a range of major group projects (Manifesta 11, 16th Tallinn Print Biennale, Syntax Lisbon, and others). He was a founding member of the Ládví group, set up with the aim of improving the quality of public space at the Prague housing estate of the same name. Photography is at the core of Jiří Thýn’s work. He experiments with the medium and explores its boundaries, as well as creating carefully conceived installations featuring photographs alongside objects, texts and projections. His photographic cycles explore themes such as transience, old age, mirroring, the (im)possibility of capturing reality in photographs, and the symmetrical relationship between negatives and positives.
