The exhibition was extended until 31 January 2024
Women have always been a great source of inspiration for artists, who have not only admired their beauty, inner strength and energy, but have also depicted women’s role in society – a role which in many cases has been predetermined by their social status. In youth, female beauty is essentially a natural attribute, but as the years pass, this beauty either wanes or becomes stronger. Life experiences are inscribed into women’s faces as a consequence of their roles as daughters, lovers, wives, mothers and friends. Artists depict the entire spectrum of emotions that women experience during the course of their lives, showing the fate which they may (or may not) resist and defy. This exhibition presents works from the gallery’s collections which explore these themes and pay tribute to women. They include works by Czech artists (Adolf Kašpar, Jakub Schikaneder) and artists from other countries (Ilya Repin, Gilles Demarteau).
