Vladimír Boudník / Structural Graphic XXI.

1963

BOUDNÍK VLADIMÍR

Boudník trained as a toolmaker. During World War II he was sent as forced labour to Germany after which he attended the State Graphics School in Prague. His structural graphics were spontaneous expression preceded by expressive figural compositions. From 1948 to 1950 he wrote three manifestos of Explosionalism. He illustrated his ideas by street events that were the forerunners of happenings. Often he used the flaking walls of Prague streets on which he would demonstrate his visions and try to show that it is possible to find pictures in everything around us, without the need for any particular education, simply by using our imagination and through visual associations. While employed at the ČKD engineering works at Vysočany on the Prague outskirts he discovered “active graphics” in which the creative experience was paramount. He would create a matrix by pressing, hammering or welding off-cuts of sheet metal, broken tools, nuts, bolts and rivets, and use it to print graphic sheets. For “structural graphics” he would use sand, off-cuts of textiles and ropes. He would give his works away to his friends and the workers in the factory. His non-conformist lifestyle and experimental oeuvre, not to mention its abstract nature, aroused the displeasure of the then regime in Czechoslovakia. Like many other artists Vladimír Boudník was banned from participating in official exhibitions. With his original concept of the creative process he ranks alongside such European figures as Joseph Beuys, who have promoted the idea that everyday life is a creative process in which everyone can become an artist
