Stanislav Kolíbal / # XIX

1992

The object # XIX of 1992 is one of a series of minimalist monochrome sculptures created out of large sheets of steel. What makes these monumental architectonic sculptures even more interesting is that they were made at the studio of the world-renowned sculptor Alexander Calder at Saché in France.

KOLÍBAL STANISLAV

Stanislav Kolíbal is one of the most highly regarded artists of the present day. During World War II he lived with this parents at Přívoz, in Ostrava, where he painted his first watercolours of secluded parts of Ostrava. They marked his entry into the art world and he would continue to 1945 to 1951 in the studio of Antonín Strnadel, as well as at the faculty of stage design of he Academy of Visual Art, where he studied under František Törster (1951−1954). Stanislav Kolíbal is known not only for his sculptures, objects, stage designs and exhibition designs (new exhibitions of the National Gallery at the Trade Fair Building in Prague), but also for his drawings and graphics, as well as book illustrations, including children’s books (new exhibitions at the National Gallery in Prague’s Trade Fair Building). Early in his career he studied sculpture in addition to illustration and stage design, and under the influence of Jan Kaplický he created stylised female torsos. He subsequently discovered Jean Arp, Constantin Brancusi and Alexander Calder and he turned his attention to nature and its elemental manifestations. He also discovered Japanese art, and this all led to his abandoning of synthetic form in favour of search in the sphere of structure. In 1965 his sculpture The Table was selected by the Guggenheim Museum. After his exhibition at Prague’s Špála Gallery in 1970 he was not allowed to exhibit either at home or abroad, which interrupted his promising international career. Nevertheless he is one of few Czech artists whose works are represented in leading collections in New York and Paris.
