The picture Lake Landscape is one of her lyrically poetic works. Toyen strove to capture dream scenes. The dreamlike landscape with the greeny-blue surface of the water in the back- ground and a dominant black rock formation is typical of the artist’s dream period, which lasted from the mid-1920s to the early 1930s. The organic shapes emerging from the surface of the water like some unknown plants are also a frequent phenomenon in Toyen’s oeuvre in that phase. The Surrealist basis of the picture is particularly powerful and it dates from her key artistic period.
