Garcia Honorio Condoy / Three Girls

1946

The drawing Three Girls represents the intimacy of the female world. With dynamic shorthand the artist captures an intimate moment after bathing. There are many of his works in galleries and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in Paris and the Saragossa Art Museum. A retrospective of the artist’s work was held in Paris in 1962. Tribute was paid to him in 1974 at the 6th International Biennale of Contemporary Sculpture in Paris and an exhibition was held in his honour at Saragossa in 1976.

CONDOY HONORIO GARCIA

Crucial to the career of sculptor and caricaturist Honorio Garcia Condoy was his time at the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Saragossa and his subsequent art studies in Madrid. After 1925 he lived successively in Madrid, Barcelona and Paris. He spent the years 1934–1937 in Rome thanks to a further study scholarship. In 1937 he settled permanently in Paris. In 1946 he spent several months in Czechoslovakia, where he helped organise The Art of Republican Spain, an exhibition of works by Spanish artists living in Paris. The exhibition also helped promote contacts between Czech artists and the rest of Europe. In the 1950s he returned to Spain and died in Madrid on 1 January 1953 after serious illness. He created his sculptures from various materials: stone, clay, wood and metal. His oeuvre was essentially figural in character, the style ranging from the realistic and expressionist to abstraction and gradual simplification of form, influenced by African and Iberian sculpture and Cubism. His most frequent subjects were female nudes and motherhood, but portrait busts also figure prominently in his oeuvre.
