It applies to the painting Canteen at EP from 1970. In this large-scale work Gross sets in motion a wild scene that is almost surreal in character. The painting consists of a bizarre jumble of every kind of object: parts of human bodies, parts of machines, articles resembling knives, glasses and bottles. It is all stacked together in a peculiar rhythm that seems chaotic at first sight. Gross, however, was able to cope both with large canvases and with complex and detailed compositions. He found the necessary rhythm, as a result of which Canteen at EP is one of the outstanding works from the later period of his oeuvre.
