Lecture by Marek Zágora. Only in Czech.
Colours play an important role in our lives, and they have done so throughout history. White is just as important a colour as red, blue, green or yellow – and like them, white has its own fascinating history. Before the 17th century, white’s status as a genuine colour was never questioned. Indeed, from ancient times to the High Middle Ages, white (along with red and black) formed part of a chromatic triad which played an important role in life and art. White also has a rich symbolic history. It has often been associated with purity, virginity, innocence, wisdom, peace, and beauty. We also tend to see it as the opposite of black – but this has not always been the case; for example, in the Middle Ages red was considered the true opposite of white. The lecture presents selected chapters from the history of white in Europe from medieval times almost up to the present day – with the main focus on the Middle Ages.
The lecture will be streamed live on Facebooku and the gallery’s YouTube channel.
