St. wenceslas in medieval visual sources

3. 9. 2024

4:30 p.m.– 6 p.m.

Lecture by Marek Zágora. Only in Czech.

Saint Wenceslas (probably 907 – 28th September 935) is considered the main patron of the Czech nation. He was a Bohemian prince descended from the legendary Přemysl the Ploughman, and he has always been (and still remains) one of the most frequently depicted figures in Czech history. Visual depictions of Wenceslas became common when the cult of his veneration began to spread, and they enable us to trace how artists’ representation of him evolved over the years. He is featured in all types of painting, in sculptural works, and also on coins, seals, and decorative items. This lecture presents “both lives” of Saint Wenceslas, with a particular focus on his depiction during the Middle Ages – from the 11th to the early 16th century. Selected items that are directly or indirectly associated with Wenceslas will also be presented.

The lecture will be streamed live on Facebooku and the gallery’s YouTube channel.
