Lecture by Marek Zágora. Only in Czech.
An anonymous set of six rare and beautifully coloured tapestries known as Lady with a Unicorn dates from around 1500. Today it is one of the most valuable exhibits at the Musée de Cluny in Paris, France’s National Museum of the Middle Ages (Musée National du Moyen Ȃge). The tapestries were probably woven in Flanders, and the largest of them have an area of 10 and 13 m². Each tapestry is dominated by a blue oval island on a red or pink background, with numerous flowers in bloom and representatives of the animal kingdom. The island always features a lady and heraldic animals, with a lion at the left and a unicorn at the right. Five of the tapestries are usually interpreted as depictions of the five senses, while the sixth represents a mysterious sixth sense. The tapestries were very popular during their era, and they were the pride and joy of their owners, accompanying them on their journeys. This lecture seeks insights into the mysteries of this unique set of tapestries, considered one of the masterworks of Western art.
