Introduction to calligraphy – writing with flat and sharp pens

28. 2. 2026

1–4.30 p. m.

workshop with Ewa Ryłko

The workshop is divided into three parts:

1. PRESENTATION

During the presentation, participants will learn fascinating facts about the history of writing. They will explore various types of historical scripts and discover how ink and parchment were made. We will take a look inside medieval scriptoria, learn how books were produced in the past, how much they weighed, what the largest book looked like, what marginalia were, and why animals in medieval illuminations look so strange.

Duration: approx. 45 minutes.

2. WRITING WITH A POINTED NIB PEN

Writing with a pointed nib in the copperplate style — a script similar to the one our grandmothers used. For many people, it feels natural and resembles the handwriting we used at school. The pointed nib responds to pressure, creating a beautiful contrast between thick and thin strokes.

3. WRITING WITH A BROAD NIB PEN

Writing with a broad nib pen, a modern version of the goose quill. Participants can choose between two styles: uncial (a historical script) or foundational hand (a script familiar from printed texts today).

All materials are included in the price. Participants can also try homemade walnut and oak gall ink.

Price: 950 CZK

Advance registration required. Reservations are valid only after the workshop fee has been paid.
