Lecture by Marek Zágora. Only in Czech.
Medieval history is primarily associated with the world of men. However, we should not forget that women also played an important role as wives, mothers and daughters. Although most medieval women remain entirely nameless to us today, we do nevertheless know about many exceptional women who succeeded in stepping out from behind men’s shadow. We have the most information about the lives of empresses, queens and princesses, many of whom proved their capability as monarchs. We also know about influential women from monastic orders and the nobility, whose lives were considered worthy of being recorded in writing; some of them were canonized in recognition of their exemplary lives and actions. In the late Middle Ages, women from lower strata of society began to gain more prominence. This lecture presents the lives of ten women from the medieval Bohemian Lands who made an impact on Czech history.
