It is 925 years since the birth of the renowned medieval mystic, visionary, healer and author Hildegard of Bingen (1098–1179). She experienced visions from an early age, and already as a child she devoted her life to God. For her era she was a very strong and independent woman, who overcame numerous obstacles to build and run two monasteries. She is known mainly for her literary oeuvre, which includes visions, sermons, poems, songs, extensive correspondence, and also several medical and scientific texts. She corresponded with leading figures of her time who turned to her for advice. Already in the Middle Ages she was considered a sainted woman, but she was never officially canonized. Her exceptional historical importance is reflected in the fact that in October 2012 she was only the fourth woman ever to be made a Doctor of the Church. This lecture presents the life and work of this exceptional woman.
