Lecture by Marek Zágora. Only in Czech.
Women played a very important role in the lives of the Bohemian and Roman kings from the house of Luxembourg. They included not only the kings’ wives, whose role was to ensure the continuation of the family and its rule, but also numerous other women (mothers, daughters, lovers) who influenced the kings’ lives – and even their reigns – in various ways. The most information we have concerns the kings’ closest relatives, and of course their wives too. The Luxembourgs were keen to have large numbers of children, especially sons. Some of them were very aware of how important marriage policy was for the family, as a successfully implemented marriage policy represented a good foundation for successful rule. Marriages were often motivated by politics; the king gained not only a wife and a potential mother of his children, but in many cases he also acquired territory and political allies. This lecture will present the women who played important roles in the lives of famous and less famous Luxembourgs.
The lecture will be streamed live on Facebooku and the gallery’s YouTube channel.
