Publication for an exhibition held in 2016 at the House of Art (Dům umění) in Ostrava to celebrate the work of Daniel Balabán. In addition to reproductions and a catalogue, the publication also contains Balabán’s curriculum vitae and four texts authored respectively by Renata Skřebská, Jiří Jůza, Jan Kudrna and the collector Richard Adam, including Renata Skřebská’s interview with Daniel Balabán entitled “On a mission both clear and unclear”. Daniel Balabán is one of the most prominent figures on Ostrava’s art scene – but, as the accompanying texts (and above all his paintings) demonstrate, his works transcend regional and indeed national boundaries. His paintings – the medium to which he feels the closest bond – convey a powerful and often complex semantic charge, drawing on religious and personal themes as well as voicing social criticism.
