Changes in German graphics at the turn of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century

9. 7. – 14. 9. 2014

The exhibition presents the rich collections of graphics from the Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava. It focuses on German authors, as well as “Czech Germans,” whose primarily symbolist works significantly influenced the Czech artistic environment, as both ethnicities often intertwined in many ways. Common elements include a partly expressive sensibility and a fascination with fairy tales, mystical stories, and landscapes seen as the "image of the soul." A typical feature is the overlap with spiritual realms, fantasy, and the language of symbols. Equally important is the gradual shift toward social and civil themes. Artists represented in the exhibition include Max Klinger, Emil Orlik, Johann Heinrich Vogeler, and Käthe Kollwitz.
