As part of this year’s programme, these artists and their works, which have been courageously and generously selected by the gallery’s management and its acquisitions committee, will be displayed together in one exhibition hall. These works contain a considerable degree of provocation – they go to the very edge, they are sensitive yet forceful, humorous, insightful, playful, clever, and thought-provoking. Without doubt they are works that can connect with all audiences, not only those of the female gender.
These works bring their artists together as sisters-in-art, friends and acquaintances, whether living or deceased. They are women who have set us an example, who have preceded us in their life and work, who have inspired us, or – like the fantastic Adriena Šimotová – who have supported us at the start of our careers, attending our openings and cheering us on. Most of the artists on display grew up together, stepped together into the waters of Czech contemporary art, and churned those waters up. We are colleagues, teachers, activists, or simply close friends. We have always resonated with other in some way – we have been aware of each other, we have taken inspiration from each other simply by being in it together.
Although we have not undergone a ritual of blood sisterhood, I see our existence in art – in creating art and living it to the full – as a clear signal that we are on the same wavelength. We see the world through women’s eyes, across the decades and the centuries. We perceive the world through our bodies, and we transform our lived experience into the language of art – that is what we all have in common. We are women artists, and our works are part of the gallery’s collections.
Consider this exhibition one of many re-opening perspectives on the world, reflected through the perception, vision, experience and sensitivity of women artists.
